The audiences all around the world are keenly observing the happenings in Malayalam cinema. The content-driven narratives are one of its prevalent factors. Fortunately, this is not novel for the industry as it started this practice even before the concept of heavy spotlight and stardom.
Speaking of a social and sensitive issue is the utmost attribute in Malayalam storytelling along with blending a profound literary device. Many such pieces have been adapted into a visual representation in the filmography. Visionaries like M.T Vasudevan Nair, M. Mukundan, Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, Unni. R, S. Hareesh, etc. are some of the prominent examples.
‘Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Kadha’ (Eng. Manikyam of Paleri: A Midnight Murder Story) is such an exemplary effort of its kind that is going to be
re- released worldwide on the big screens on the 4th of October.
Written and directed by Ranjith, based on a novel by T.P Rajeevan, the movie is a 2009 Indian Malayalam-language mystery film where the story revolves around the unnatural death of a young woman named Manikyam in Paleri, a small village in northern Kerala, in the late 1950s. The events will then be followed by a close and parallel re-investigation by Haridas, a detective cum novelist and supported by Sarayu, who is a crime analyst.
The screenplay, direction, and performances are top-notch one among the other and non-comparable. Also, the presentation of such a sensitive matter has been well-crafted with no humiliation to the literary work to where it is adapted.
The three characters played by Actor Mammooty are jaw-dropping and subtle with distinctive and non-superimposable roles. Mounting a role like ‘Murikkam Kandath Ahamed Haji’ is not a child’s play and the ability in convincing such a character by a superstar is a remarkable feat.
Subsequently, this helped the audience in witnessing the actor’s splendid performance in Rahul Sadasivan’s ‘Bramayugham’. Other supporting cast like Swetha Menon, Mythili, Siddique, Sreenivasan, and Gowri Munjal have done noteworthy performances in the film.
Producers A V Anoop along with Maha Subair bankrolled the movie and the technical labour included the handling of cinematography by Manoj Pillai, editing by Vijay Shankar, and music composed by Bijibal as well as Sharreth respectively.
