The Malayalam film industry has been so versatile in its content-driven ideas and capable of producing projects of the must-watch category. The trend of re-releasing some of the classics produced back in the 90s and 2000s has received great acclaim from the nostalgic as well as today’s audience. How the sequels for cult classic blockbusters can bring a new arena for the industry?
Two films have been recently updated by the directors with a high possibility of making sequels that have been profoundly done during the released period. What can be done to achieve the sequels? Would it deface its first part?
Recently, director Johny Antony has opened up his idea for conceiving a sequel for his blockbuster CID Moosa, which had a cult fan-following due to its performance and making. The movie is a 2003 Indian Malayalam-language action-comedy film directed by Johny Antony, written by Udaykrishna–Sibi K. Thomas duo, and co-produced by Dileep for Grand Productions.
Actor Dileep plays the title role of a private detective and features an ensemble cast of actors Bhavana, Ashish Vidyarthi, Sharat Saxena, Murali, Harisree Ashokan, Cochin Haneefa, Jagathy Sreekumar, Vijayaraghavan, Captain Raju, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Sukumari, and Salim Kumar in important roles.
Simultaneously, veteran director and actor Rajasenan has announced his cult classic ‘Meleparambil Aanveedu’, about the thought of its second installment with a new team for the technical department.
The flick is a 1993 Indian Malayalam-language romantic comedy-drama film directed by Rajasenan and scripted by Raghunath Paleri from a story by Gireesh Puthenchery. It stars actors Jayaram and Shobana, alongside actors Narendra Prasad, Meena Joseph, Jagathy Sreekumar, Janardanan, Vijayaraghavan, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, and Vinu Chakravarthy in supporting roles. The film was produced and distributed by Mani C. Kappan for Okay Productions.
In supporting the effort, this film is considered one of the best comedy movies in Malayalam cinema and has a cult status.
On the contrary, both films have limitations in bringing back the essence of narrative in humour and subtlety as most of its selling prepositions like the performances of actors like Jagathy Sreekumar and Narendra Prasad will be a huge loss for the effort.
