The news of the demise of veteran Malayalam actor Kaviyoor Ponnamma dated a day before yesterday is unpleasant. Her contribution to the film industry has been irreplaceable with an impeccable record of performing the greatest number of ‘mother roles’ for various stars. Binged would like to mention two movies in which the actor broke the conventional concept of the ‘golden mother’ image and would be able to awe the audience.
The actor plays a role in the drama movie Thaniyaavarthanam (Eng. The Repeating Rhythm, 1987) in which she plays the character of the main lead’s mother. The mystery of an imperfect blend in the compassion and orthodox mindset of a person who thereby comes to see that her son is facing the burden of being claimed as a lunatic by society, which leads to killing him herself has been portrayed efficiently by the actor. The role she held was beyond every expectation of the audience.
The movie is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
The character ‘Unni Amma’ in Nandanam (2002) breaks all the conventionality by being a compassionate matriarch of a well-known clan who makes an ultimatum to the whole relatives for her grandson and a maid by making them married and approving their affair. Despite being a romantic drama and story told from the perspective of Balamani, who is the maid for Unni Amma, the character arc has a brilliant space and the actor has done it with an ace. Furthermore, the movie will be a good watch if the viewers haven’t seen it yet.
The movie can be watched on Amazon Prime Video.
