The continued talks about pre-sales for OTT viewership and the distribution of smaller in-budget films have halted in today’s releases and four movies are being represented for the upcoming clash of Kerala’s box office. The first show of the expected movie ‘Thekku Vadakku’ has been completed and audience intake is a satiable number. But is the movie able to satisfy them?
‘Thekku Vadakku’ (Eng. [Colloquial] here and there) is a Malayalam comedy-drama which is directed by Prem Sankar. The screenplay, adapted from S Hareesh’s story ‘Rathri Kaaval’ (Night Guarding), is crafted by its writer himself. The movie is bankrolled by Anjana Talkies in collaboration with VARS Studios, led by V. A. Shrikumar Menon.
The technical labour includes music and scores by Sam C S, editing by Kiran Das, and cinematography by Suresh Rajan respectively. Actors Vinayakan and Suraj Venjaramoodu play the main leads in the film along with actors Merin Jose, Vineeth Vishwam, Melvin G Babu, Shameer Khan, Sheethal Joseph, and Kottayam Ramesh in supporting roles.
The movie has received average to mixed responses, more or less the anticipated level. The merits include the performances of the lead actors, the character arc, the compelling reason for the narrative, and engaging background scores.
However, the limitations include the connecting of humour to the audience as it is the basic genre for the movie, and the duration is tiresome compared due to the nature of the short story. There is less significance for other actors and technical wings have nothing remarkable.
Furthermore, the movie has a slight similarity to Jean Paul Lal’s 2019 Malayalam film named ‘Driving License’ which showcased the same concept of ego thereby becoming wrath despite making it in a humorous approach.
The trend of the ‘two leads effect’ in a movie is going on and there are more to come this year with ‘Thekku Vadakku’ being a one-time watchable flick.
