Was It A Profound September For Malayalam OTT Releases?

By kasturi_ops - Sep 30, 2024 @ 05:09 pm

The month of September had been an awaited one for its highly anticipated movies, Malayalam being one irrespective of the boundaries. But did it become a great one? Or does its quantity over quality deteriorate the expectations?

A total of nine Malayalam films have been released through different OTT platforms which include six comedies, two thrillers, and one family drama in genres respectively. The month is a distinctive one in comparison with previous ones for presenting more humour films. Does it satisfy the audience?

‘Pavi Caretaker’ (September 6) is a comedy-drama that revolves around the heartwarming story of an unmarried caretaker whose mundane life in a residential complex takes a joyful turn when he forms an unexpected bond. Actor Dileep is the main character and the movie is directed by Vineeth Kumar.

The movie received less critical acclaim due to its lack of novelty and unconvincing narrative. However, audiences who love to watch the performance of the main actor can go for it. The flick is available on the Manorama MAX platform.

‘Adios Amigo’ (September 6) is a Family-comedy drama that talks about the hilarious journey through the lives of two men from drastically different social backgrounds who happen to cross paths at a bus stand. Their chance of meeting at the bus stand leads to comic misadventures when a luggage mix-up forces them to travel together.

The performances of actors Asif Ali and Suraj Venjaramoodu are brilliant and noteworthy despite the pattern of storytelling and inability to engage the audience. The flick is available to watch on The Netflix platform.

‘Thalavan’ (September 9) is a Drama-investigation thriller that speaks a different cop story that makes a realization of the inside hierarchy in police service and a prevalent investigation going on in parallel. Through the lens of this investigation, the film explores themes of corruption, loyalty, and the ethical dilemmas faced by officers.

Actors Biju Menon and Asif Ali are leading the film with unabashed performances, with excellent screenplay and technical labour supporting the narrative and total outlook of the flick. This can be watched on the Sony LIV platform.

‘Vishesham’ (September 10) is a family drama that speaks about middle-aged married couples and their shackles made outside by society and the narrative deals with how they break them with an element of social message.

The performances by Anand Madhusoodhanan and Chinnu Chandini Nair are average to mixed levels with not much intrigues or surprises provided. However, it is a watchable family-romantic drama. The movie is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

‘Nunakuzhi’ (September 13) is a Jeethu Joseph directorial flick, who is popular for his ‘Drishyam’ franchise, approached his unusual way of presenting a comedy-thriller drama which was a theatrical success last month. However, the OTT audience was not very satisfied compared to its theatre response.

Subsequently, the performances of the main actors were not convincing to the point and the screenplay was just below-average. The movie can be watched on the ZEE 5 platform.

‘Jaladhara Pumpset Since 1962’ (September 15) is a comedy-social drama that deals with a stolen pump set from the home of a widow. The intriguing plot begins with the case being filed by her late husband and unfolds over the years. As the widow grapples with the loss and the case’s slow progression, the narrative delves into the impact of the theft on her life.

Albeit not a huge theatrical success, this flick can satisfy the OTT audiences for its performances of actors Oorvashi and Indrans, storyline, and direction. This movie cannot be listed in a highly recommended section, but some elements in the narrative are too good. The movie is available to watch on the Jio Cinema platform

‘Vaazha- A biopic of a Billion Boys’ (September 23) is a comedy-drama based on a young vibe and was a great theatrical success. This movie was the most expected one to release on OTT this month. The tremendous response is still on due to its connecting nature and ability to convince the audience, especially the youth.

The performances, scripting, and technical labour are receiving high acclaim and support. The movie can be watched on Disney+Hotstar platform.

‘Bharatanatyam’ (September 27) is a comedy family-drama flick that travels a family’s journey through an unexpected crisis that tests their bonds. With a witty and insightful perspective, the film highlights the humor that can arise in tough times. Relatable characters showcase resilience and warmth, revealing their struggles and growth while emphasizing the importance of family support.

The performances of actors Sai Kumar and Saiju Kurup are watchable factors of the flick and the making is just an average to mixed level. This movie can be watched on the Manorama MAX platform.
