A movie should never be judged solely by its theatrical performance. In today’s OTT age, a film that fails at the box office can easily find new life on digital platforms, and that’s exactly what might happen with the underrated Malayalam gem Avihitham.
Helmed by Senna Hegde, the director behind the critically acclaimed Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam, Avihitham was released in October to overwhelmingly positive reviews. Critics hailed it as one of the funniest Malayalam films of the year, yet it failed to translate that acclaim into commercial success.
With its digital premiere set for November 14 on JioHotstar, the film is now perfectly positioned to reach the mass audience that unfortunately missed its theatrical run.
Set in Hegde’s familiar, fictitious North Kerala village of Ravaneshwaran, Avihitham is a sharp black comedy and social satire built around the thinnest thread of a rumour.
The story begins when loafer Prakashan (Renji Kankol) spots a couple kissing and identifies the man (Vinod) but not the woman. Fueled by misplaced curiosity and moral policing, Prakashan and the village’s self-righteous “moral brigade” launch an absurd investigation to unmask the mysterious woman.
Their pursuit quickly and falsely targets Nirmala (Vrinda Menon), the daughter-in-law of a respected family, setting off a chain of satirical chaos.
Hegde masterfully uses humour and irony to expose societal double standards. Critics praised the film’s razor-sharp writing, naturalistic performances from its non-star cast (a hallmark of Hegde’s filmmaking), and its crisp 100-minute runtime, which keeps the satire engaging even as the themes grow darker and more ironic.
The film’s disappointing box office run can largely be attributed to its modest scale and absence of major stars. But streaming platforms thrive on content, not celebrity. Avihitham depends entirely on its clever script, grounded humour, and authentic local flavour, the same ingredients that helped other small-scale Malayalam films find huge success on OTT. Its tight screenplay, short runtime, and witty mystery make it the perfect low-commitment binge.
Adding to its appeal, Avihitham will release on JioHotstar in five languages: Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi, significantly expanding its reach and giving this underappreciated gem a second chance to shine. Stay tuned for more updates.
