Amal Neerad latest theatrical release ‘Bougainvillea’ released in theatres in October and is finally set for its OTT debut after almost two months. Inspired by Lajo Jose’s 2019 novel “Ruthinte Lokam”, ‘Bougainvillea’ will premiere on SonyLIV on 13th December, 2024 in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
‘Bougainvillea’ is a psychological crime thriller slasher film that follows the story of a family entangled in a police investigation surrounding the mysterious disappearance of tourists in Kerala. The film explores themes of love, trust, and the quest for identity amid chaos.
Directed by Amal Neeraj who has co-written the film with Lajo Jose, ‘Bougainvillea’ received mixed reviews and was moderately successful at the box office. The critics have described the film as unsatisfying and that the director needs to reinvent his ways instead of reusing the same formulas.
The question that now arises is, will ‘Bougainvillea’ bloom to its fill capacity on OTT and spread its fragrance as it hoped for upon its theatrical release? Well, it certainly might given the credibility of Malayalam films, its phenomenally talented filmmakers and actors.
‘Bougainvillea’ has some of the best cast members including Jyothirmayi in the titular role who is making his comeback to cinema after an 11-year hiatus alongside Kunchako Boban, Fahadh Faasil, Veena Nandakumar, Sharaf U Dheen and Srinda in supporting roles.
All this raises hopes pretty high for ‘Bougainvillea’ and how it will deliver on this promise remains to be seen. ‘Bougainvillea’ will land on SonyLIV on 13th December, 2024 in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
