Tamil Nadu Government has allowed 100% occupancy in the film theaters across the state with immediate effect. The State Government seems to have given up to the pressure of Superstar Vijay and the exhibitors’ lobby in arriving at the decision. The immediate beneficiaries will be Vijay’s Master and Simbu’s Eswaran which are going to release for Pongal.
Cinema industries across the country were not expecting permission for 100% occupancy at least till Summer. So, this decision of the Tamil Nadu Government came as a total surprise for them. It is natural that the film industries will be lobbying with the respective state governments for similar relaxation in all the states.
Until now, all the notable releases across various film industries were postponed to Summer. So that leaves some room for the OTT platforms to lure some more films into skipping the theatrical releases. Does this relaxation mean doors closed for OTT in Tamil? That can not as simple as said. If the cases in Tamil Nadu do not increase drastically by this month-end, that may happen.
If they increase, we may even get to see the total closure of the theaters. Even before all this, the legal system should not intervene and stop the Government’s decision. Keeping aside what happens to the industry or the OTT, the scientific community feels 100% occupancy in theaters is quite risky.
