Ex-Royals Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have taken the first step towards earning a respectable earning of their own, away from the cocooned life of British royalty. The couple has reportedly signed a humongous deal with Netflix – $150 Million is how humongous it is, as per media reports.
The couple ceased to be working members of the British Royal family, when they relinquished Royal duties and gave up their royalty at the beginning of the year. However, their mega deal will still be scrutinized closely by the Royal Palace, as per previously set guidelines for the couple’s separation from the Royal family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had left England to first settle in Canada, and now, in California where they’ve just bought a $14.7 million home in Montecito, about an hour north of Malibu. They will share the vicinity with Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres.
Living in California will be easier for the couple to embark on their new Hollywood journey. The Netflix deal will entail the couple making documentaries and docu-series, feature films, scripted shows and children’s programming. The couple said they want to produce content that “informs but also gives hope”. They are already in the midst of developing a nature docuseries and an animated series celebrating inspiring women.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have founded an as-yet-unnamed production company. The Netflix deal is the first under its aegis. The deal is said to be multiyear, though no information is available on how many years it is worth.
Incidentally, Meghan Markle has no plans to return to acting, after her exit from Suits in 2018, just before her wedding to the Prince.
Apple, Disney, Quibi, NBCUniversal are among some of the streamers that were wooing the couple besides Netflix. But the couple signed on the dotted line with Netflix, as they believe that “Netflix’s unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action.”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are the second celebrity couple that the streaming platform has signed up outside of showbiz. The Obamas, Barack and Michelle, were the first celeb couple to come on board Netflix.
