1899 has completed a three-week run on Netflix India. The series was widely hailed as the biggest Netflix release of the year but it came out to be highly mediocre in terms of audience reception. The series, although brilliant, was not received as warmly as Dark was.
If we see the Netflix charts then we see a stark difference in the views earned by Wednesday or 1899.
With an insane and unprecedented view, Wednesday has come out to be the undermined dark horse while 1899 mere a disappointment.
But the bigger question is, where did it go wrong?
The answer lies in the way the series was promoted. The USP of the series was “from the makers of Dark”. Instead of having a face value of its own, 1899 was rather a series from the makers of Dark. This helped in the initial buzz but couldn’t drag the hype.
The second reason could be the sudden release of Wednesday. That may have snatched significant buzz and views from 1899 because the difference between the views of both titles is just outstanding.
Overall the case is an interesting one and Netflix must look into the deeper factors that pushed 1899 into such a situation.
