Mrinal Sen is without any doubt one of the most important names in the history of Indian cinema. His name resonates with the other two cinema legends of Bengal, Ray and Ghatak, making him part of a holy trinity. This year, Mrinal Sen would have turned 100. On his birth centenary two tribute projects are coming along that will celebrate the filmmaker and his vision. However, the two projects have no similarity in content and story.
One film will be ‘Padatik’, directed by the National Award winning director Srijit Mukherjee. It will be the biopic of the artist and Bangladeshi actor Chanchal Chowdhury is playing the lead. Chanchal has already shocked fans with his transformation and make-up where he already looks like Mrinal Sen himself.
The other film will be from another National Award winning director Kaushik Ganguly. It is named ‘Palan’ and will act as a sequel to ‘Kharij’, directed by Sen. The starcast will be almost the same. Mamata Shankar and Anjan Dutta will be in the lead and there will be addition of other actors like Jisshu Sengupta as well. After almost 40 years of the release of Kharij, it will be interesting to see what new perspective Ganguly adds to the story. This movie too acts as a tribute project to Mrinal Sen and will come out this year only.
Mrinal Sen is known for directing films like ‘Kharij’, ‘Bhuvan Shome’, ‘Padatik’, ‘Genesis’, ‘Khandhar’ and he has brought international fame to Indian cinema after Ray. It is good that the filmmakers of this gemeration are taking up him and his stories for their films. However the stark difference between the two projects intended for the same objective is quite interesting and we are hopeful that both movies find their suitable audiences and have a successful run.
