2 Weeks Into New Year, Netflix Has Already Cancelled 5 Top Shows

2023 has barely begun, and Netflix is at it again. The streaming giant is on a ruthless cancelling spree – some would say, the most ruthless of recent times. We’re hardly two weeks into the new year, and Netflix has already canceled five top shows in its library – majority of them after just one season.

The first shock of the year came at Netflix when news trickled out that the streamer had cancelled its much-touted time-travel mystery series ‘1899‘. The series is from the makers of the blockbuster ‘DARK’, and hence had high expectations for viewers. Netflix, apparently, was not happy with the viewership metrics of ‘1899’, and decided against renewing the show for Season 2.

The cancelling of ‘1899’ set the ball rolling, triggering a wave of cancellations at Netflix. Well-received show, ‘The Chair’, was axed after Season 1. The show is from pedigreed makers, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, of Game Of Thrones fame, and stars Sandra Oh as a woman who becomes the chair of a failing English department at a University. The decision left fans of the show baffled.

Next came cancellations of popular animated show ‘Inside Job‘, which was axed after one season, despite getting renewed for Season 2 last year. Another animated show ‘Dead End: Paranormal Park’ got the boot at Netflix, after two back-to-back seasons, both released in 2022.

Finally, Neil Patrick Harris’ comedy series ‘Uncoupled’ got the axe this Friday, which was last night. The show comes from ‘Emily In Paris’ creator, Darren Star, and follows a gay man who is left high and dry by his lover of 17 years, and suddenly finds himself single in his forties, in New York City.

Phew, that is five shows cancelled by Netflix in roughly 13 days – one every 2 days or so. We expect the streaming giant to announce more cancellations of shows in the near future, shows that apparently don’t meet its high standards of quality and viewership.
