The stage is all set for the 2024 edition of the Academy Awards, whose verdict will be out on 10th March 2024. Before that, the nominations voting process will take place and the final five nominees will be announced on 23rd January 2024. And before that, a list of fifteen shortlisted films will be announced on 21st December 2023.
The Academy has recently published the list of those 288 films which are eligible to be nominated in the Documentary Feature Film (167 titles), International Feature Film (from 88 countries) and Animated Feature Film (33 films) categories.
Many acclaimed titles have made it to the Oscars 2024 ‘International Feature Film’ eligible films list. The list includes several films from across the globe such as the Chinese sci-fi flick ‘The Wandering Earth 2’, the Finnish comedy drama ‘Fallen Leaves’, the French culinary romantic drama ‘The Taste of Things’, and the German drama ‘The Teachers’ Lounge’, amongst other international films.
On the Indian movies front, India’s official Oscar 2024 entry has been included in the ‘International Feature Film’ eligible titles list and the name of that Indian movie is the Malayalam language survival drama ‘2018’. So, one small yet important hurdle to the Oscar 2024 race has been crossed. Earlier, the same Indian movie had also cracked the coveted Letterboxd top 50 international movies list.
‘2018’ is set against the backdrop of the 2018 Kerala floods and revolves around a group of people from different walks of life and how the devastating floods suddenly upturned their lives. It also focuses on the incredible efforts made by the people including the fishermen and the local people, in order to overcome the catastrophic calamity.
As far as the ‘Documentary Feature Film’ eligible titles list is concerned, Indian documentary film ‘Against the Tide’ has also been included. It revolves around two friends Rakesh and Ganesh, who work as fishermen in Mumbai. While one of them deploys traditional fishing methods, the other one uses a more modern approach of deep-sea fishing. But both these men must deal with their own problems as a rift begins to develop in their friendship.
‘2018’ movie is streaming in India on the SonyLIV OTT platform but ‘Against the Tide’ is currently not streaming anywhere on Indian OTT. Like always, the competition is pretty tough at the Oscars, so let’s hope these Indian films make the cut to the final list of nominees.
