2020’s Most Missed Chance: Wonder Woman 1984 Vs. Black Widow

2020’s Most Missed Chance: Wonder Woman 1984 Vs. Black Widow

2020 was supposed to be the year of the battle of the female juggernauts – Wonder Woman and Black Widow. Wonder Woman represents the best of DC’s Cinematic Universe while Black Widow was going to be Marvel’s second stand-alone female superhero film. But Black Widow is an original Avenger just like Wonder Woman, who is one of the original members of Justice League and seeing them both duke it out in the box office would have been a sight to behold.

Black Widow will most likely be Scarlet Johansson’s last outing as the titular deadly assassin, with Florence Pugh’s character Yelena Belova expected to take over the mantle of The Black Widow at the end of this feature. This will be a wonderful end to Natasha Romanoff’s arc and a stand-alone movie was the very least the character deserved. Wonder Woman 1984 on the other hand is coming off the high of the 2017 feature Wonder Woman, which was followed by the Joss Whedon disaster Justice League. This will be a chance for redemption for both the actor and character (Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman respectively) and along with Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord and Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah, this has all the workings of an epic action adventure. This was why the clash of these two features in the box office was so desperately needed. Both female superheroes with unique powers in different circumstances would have been two brilliant movies to watch in the theaters.

Black Widow’s original release date was May 1st 2020 and it was expected to be the first movie/ series which introduced Marvel’s Phase Four. Wonder Woman 1984 was actually expected to release last year on December 13th 2019, then it was moved up to November 1st 2019, which then got pushed to June 5th, 2020. Both the dates were fixed on the last mentioned dates but due to the global spread of the coronavirus, the “clash” of these brilliant characters was postponed.

Eventually Marvel decided to play it safe and has set the movie to be released on May 7th, 2021. The film will still be the first movie to be featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Phase Four. Warner Media on the other hand decided to release Wonder Woman 1984 in theaters around the world and on the streaming service HBOMax simultaneously. The movie has done relatively well in terms of box office numbers and views, with critics and audiences having given the film an above average score.

Wonder Woman 1984 released in India on 25th December 2020 in theaters. Check out the movie when it opens in theaters near you.
