The global box office may have reached nearly $33.9 billion in 2023, which shows a noticeable improvement of nearly 31% over 2022’s value, as per the latest report from Gomer Street Analytics. There is no denying that the global box office has never been the same after the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. The year 2020 was a complete nightmare for the entertainment industry due to the closing of movie theatres because of COVID-19 regulations. Although, 2023’s collection is still 15% less than the average of the last three pre-pandemic years (2017-2019).
In addition, Gomer Street Analytics disclosed in its report that the global box office collections may tank down to $31.5 billion in 2024, highlighting a decrease of 7% from 2023’s value. Scenarios like the Hollywood strikes forced many prominent studios to postpone their big-budgeted projects and schedule their release after 2024. For instance, Disney will release only one Marvel flick this year, Deadpool 3, scheduled to come out on July 26, 2024. Other Marvel projects like Thunderbolts, Blade, and Captain America: Brave New World will now be released in 2025. In addition, projects like Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 8, Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Disney’s Elio and Snow White, and many more have been postponed to 2025 as well.
Gomer Street Analytics’ report also revealed that the domestic regions (the United States and Canada) earned the highest revenue ($9.05 billion) last year, an impressive 21% growth from 2022’s figures. On the other hand, China’s revenue share stood at 23% in 2023, representing its $7.7 billion revenue (approx.). The local titles largely dominated the country’s box office last year. Only some foreign movies were able to leave significant marks on Chinese soil, such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, Fast X, Meg 2: The Trench, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and Oppenheimer.
India’s collections are not included in Gomer Street Analytics’ report as the firm suffers from a lack of strong presence in the country.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was the highest-grossing film of 2023, with a substantial collection of $1.44 billion globally. The second and third place went to Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer, earning $1.36 billion and $955 million, respectively, at the global box office. Stay tuned for more updates.
