The first movie in the list is ‘Goynar Baksho’ and the Hindi version is known as ‘Bua Ji Ke Gehne’. It tells the story of a young bride in a rich family who finds herself in trouble as the matriarch of the family suddenly dies and her ghost entrusts the girl with the responsibility of looking after her jewelry box. ‘Devi’ by Satyajit Ray is one of the finest movies ever made in Bengali. It is not available on any OTT platform but you can watch it on YouTube. The movie shrouds the terrible patriarchy and dogmatism of Indian society under the veil of ‘Devi worship’. The movie stars actors like Sharmila Tagore, Chhabi Biswas and Soumitra Chatterjee and the performances are beautiful. If you are a fan of Bengali movies, do not miss this one.
Ekannoborti (2021) : Hoichoi
Here is a recent movie for the list. ‘Ekannoborti’ tells the story of three generations who meet each other during Durga Puja at the family gathering and start to face new challenges. The movie is directed by Mainak Bhoumik and stars actors like Aparajita Auddy, Shouraseni Mitra, Sandipta Sen, Kaushik Sen and more. The story starts with excitement goes on to chaos and then comes to a resolution with the acceptance of different perspectives. It is available to watch on Hoichoi.
