Netflix has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry with the release of the highly anticipated trailer for “3 Body Problem”, a sci-fi epic based on Liu Cixin’s renowned novel of the same name, the first book of his Remembrance of Earth Trilogy. The Project is spearheaded by the dynamic duo behind the cultural phenomenon, Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B Weiss.
The two minutes and thirty five seconds long trailer starts with a cautionary voiceover “Something or someone is targeting our scientists” followed by a visual of dead bodies hinting at the unknown threat that looms large over planet earth. Benedict Wong, who’s portraying the character of Da Shi accompanies a team of scientists, lead by Liam Cunningham, who are on a mission to save planet earth from this imminent peril. It then delves deeper offering us a sneak peek of the visually stunning and intellectually challenging chaos that spreads across multiple places and timelines that would make audiences yearn for a handbook. The trailer ends with yet another cautionary voiceover by Rosalind Chao “They are coming and there’s nothing you can do to stop them” as Liam’s eyes gape at the sky in shock and terror.
The series was first announced in September 2020 and production began in late 2021. The series is reportedly Netflix’s most expensive production till date with a budget of over $200 million. Alexander Woo, who has previously written several episodes for HBO drama series True Blood has shared writing credits in this series along with showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The pilot episode will be directed by Derek Tsang.
The original novel follows Ye Wenjie, an astrophysicist who loses her parents during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, makes contact with an alien planet in her top secret job as a technician on Red Coast base. Upon its release, the Novel received widespread critical acclaim and became the first Asian novel to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel.
3 body problem stars Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Eiza Gonzales and Benedict Wong in the lead roles and premiers on Netflix on March 21.
