After delivering two blockbuster films ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Jawan’ this year, Shah Rukh Khan is all geared up for his third film of the year – ‘Dunki’, which is slated for a theatrical release on 21st December. The highly anticipated movie has been directed by none other than Rajkumar Hirani (after a gap of five years as a director) and it’s his first collaboration with SRK.
And that’s why the overall curiosity around the film is quite high. However, there are three major causes of concern, which crossed our mind before the theatrical release of ‘Dunki’.
No Vidhu Vinod Chopra
Until now, all Rajkumar Hirani films right from his directorial debut ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ to ‘Sanju’ have been produced by veteran filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra (Parinda, 1942: A Love Story), who must have also contributed creatively to these films.
But Vidhu Vinod Chopra or his production house Vinod Chopra Films’ name is conspicuous by its absence for the very first time in ‘Dunki’. VVC’s absence can potentially affect the film’s quality and its overall entertainment value. We are not undermining Rajkumar Hirani’s prowess behind the camera, but we should also not underestimate the power of creative inputs given by an accomplished filmmaker like Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
Something Missing In The Trailer
When Dunki’s trailer came out a couple of days back, it promised a singularly unique story and was admired by a huge number of fans. But on the other hand, there was also a segment of disappointed film enthusiasts who opined that the trailer was not up to the mark compared to the trailer cuts of Rajkumar Hirani’s earlier films (like ‘3 Idiots’, ‘PK’, and ‘Sanju’).
Some of them thought that even though the ‘Dunki’ trailer was a nice blend of humour, drama, and emotional elements, there was something missing and that something was not right. Perhaps the reason behind this is that the makers did not want to reveal more of the film’s story. But let’s see.
Box-Office Clash With Another Biggie ‘Salaar’
We cannot just close our eyes and say that because SRK has delivered two massive blockbusters ‘Jawan’ and ‘Pathaan’ in 2023 and Prabhas’s last few films haven’t performed as per expectations, ‘Salaar’ won’t pose a threat to ‘Dunki’.
Both Prabhas and Prashanth Neel have their own following and Dunki’s prospects even in the North region will also depend on how Salaar, which releases a day later, performs at the box office. That would in turn depend on how well these films are actually made and received by the audiences. Verdict will be out soon!
