There are many types and phases of any mental illness and mental illnesses are just as real diseases as any physical ones. Yet, they are tabooed and put under many unreal stereotypes. In movies too, mental Illnesses are not always very well put. Here is a short list of films that get the subject right and treat mental illnesses the way they should be treated.
Karthik Calling Karthik (2010) – Netflix:
Karthik Calling Karthik is directed by Zoya Akhtar and stars Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. It is more of a romantic thriller which tells the story of a guy with a mediocre personality who wants to impress a girl but cannot. One day he gets a call from someone who claims to be Karthik himself. He does not believe the person at first but then he tells him secrets that no one ever knew except for him. The second Karthik helps him in many ways but at last turns against him and promises to destroy him.
Judgementall Hai Kya (2019) – Zee5:
Directed by Prakash Kovelamudi, ‘Judgementall Hai Kya’ stars Rajkumar Rao and Kangana Ranaut in the lead roles. It tells the story of Bobby, who is suffering from a childhood trauma and she lends a room of her house to a couple Keshav and Rima. However, he is suspicious of Keshav and stalks the couple time and again. She finds out that Keshav too is somewhat different and possesses a quirky personality just like she does. The two soon come closer.
15 Park Avenue (2005) – Amazon Prime Video On Rent:
’15 Park Avenue’ is directed by Aparna Sen and stars Konkona Sen Sharma and Shaban Azmi in the lead roles. It tells the story of a schizophrenic girl Meethi who lives with her sister. One day, when her sister is caught up in some issues, Meethi tries to find her imaginary family in the 15 Park Avenue of Kolkata. It has some wonderful performances and beautiful storytelling and you should not miss the film at any cost.
