Cheer – Netflix
The series takes you to Navarro College in Texas, whose cheer leading team has won over 13 national titles under its belt, starting from 2000. They are under pressure to win the coveted national title for this year as well, certainly due to the standards set by their coach Monica Aldama. Coming from a team of ‘Last Chance U’ with a unique perspective at cheer-leading.
Devaki – Amazon Prime Video
With a Kahaani-esque premise of a mother Devaki, a single parent trying to find her missing daughter Aaradhya in Kolkata, Devaki is a slow-paced thriller that gives an interesting spin to motherhood. The mother takes the help of a cop Kishore, a rare Kannada-speaking man in the city, who take up an interesting approach to trace Aaradhya’s whereabouts. Filmed by Lohith, who had earlier worked with the lead actress Priyanka Upendra on the movie Mummy.
Les Miserables – MUBI
MUBI continues its excellent curation of world’s finest cinema on its OTT platform, with Les Miserables, a 2017 short film helmed by Ladj Ly. Mirroring the tensions between police and locals of different ethnicities in the French suburbs, the short is told from the perspective of Pento, who has just joined the Seine-Saint-Denis anti-crime brigade and starts developing specific methods with his teammates.
