It is Diwali, so you know what that means! Definitely not staying at home and watching movies by yourself. But it is a different situation in Kerala where the state is just getting over its huge amount of Covid-19 cases from the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic – many Malayali families would prefer to stay at home during these trying times. So for the people who are forced to stay at home and can’t leave, here are four Malayalam films to check out during Diwali:
Ayyappanum Koshiyum
Ever since this Prithviraj–Biju Menon hit film was released in theatres, Malayalam filmgoers have taken to theatres (and later OTTs) to rewatch the film over and over again. Eventually, it became a “staple film” for festivals as well. This film follows police officer, Ayyappan and a retired army havildar, Koshy as their egos clash and spill on an unsuspecting village. This movie is currently running on Amazon Prime Video.
Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam
In a state that seems to have a backlog of weddings and films, comes a funny film about an engagement. Follow a family as they try to set up the perfect engagement for their middle child as their extended relatives join them for the event. As more people join, more and more family secrets get exposed. This movie can be watched on SonyLIV.
Devaasuram
Raavanaprabhu, the sequel to this film, is one of the most-watched films during Onam. While this prequel doesn’t have the sequel’s flair, it is one of Mohanlal’s must-watch films. We follow a rich socialite, Neelakanthan, who squanders away his inheritance. However, his life turns upside down when his mother reveals a terrible secret. This Malayalam feature can be viewed on YuppFlix and ErosNow.
Kumbalangi Nights
This film wasn’t made for any particular event or festival, but it comes on TV during big Malayali holidays. Maybe it is because of the movie’s feel-goodness, or because of its reliability – the film manages to be fun for everyone. Whatever the reason may be, we know that this feature is going to be a big hit during Diwali as well, so follow four brothers who do not get along with each other. But after a series of unfortunate events, this quartet of siblings are forced to rely on each other for support. This movie is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
