The GameStop stock market mania that led to the engineered skyrocketing of rates of several stocks such as GameStop and AMC has triggered a deluge of films and shows being made on the phenomenon. Every production house worth their salt has jumped onto the bandwagon to create a compelling drama out of the sensational turn of events.
Netflix, MGM, HBO and several other content production companies are planning either a movie or a series on the GameStop phenomenon.
Netflix is in advanced talks with Mark Boal, Oscar winning screenwriter of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, to pen the screenplay of a film based on GameStop stock market drama. Netflix wants to cast Noah Centineo as one of the leads of the movie. Noah is the star of the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise. Netflix has also appointed a consultant to help with the technical aspects of the script, in the form of journalist and NYU professor, Scott Galloway. The Netflix film will be produced by Brad Weston, Makeready founder and CEO, will produce the film along with Definition Entertainment’s Nick Styne.
MGM Studios already has a film in the works on the GameStop issue. It is an adaptation of Ben Mezrich’s The Antisocial Network on the same subject.
WarnerMedia is developing a scripted feature film on GameStop that will air on its channel, HBO. The film has big names producing, with Jason Blum, Andrew Ross Sorkin and Len Amato attached to the project. There’s no word on the cast as yet. The log line of the HBO film is this – “How a populist uprising of social media day traders beat Wall Street at their own game turning the stock market upside down and shaking the financial world to its core.”
There are several more projects in development on the GameStop chaos. RatPac Entertainment has bought the rights to the life story of Jamie Rogozinski, the founder of Reddit’s WallStreetBets, the Reddit subgroup that engineered the skyrocketing of GameStop’s stock price. The intention is to make a gripping film on the recent astonishing events.
Content company XTR is planning a documentary film on GameStop, directed by Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci. XTR is the company that made the audacious You Cannot Kill David Arquette. Lastly, another documentary feature is in development on GameStop, with Jonah Tulis attached as director.
