Bengali is a sweet language, tales of love are often told very differently in Bengali Cinema. The Bengali film industry is often underrated and many great films do not get the recognition that they deserve. But here is a short list of some selected great Bengali movies that you should not miss.
Dracula Sir(2020)- Amazon Prime Video:
‘Dracula Sir’ is a perfect blend for lovers of the romantic and thriller genre. It is a non-linear story that tells about a schizophrenic teacher who thinks he is the reincarnation of a rebel leader, and he lives through the love story of him.
Titli(2003)- Amazon Prime Video:
Rituparno Ghosh is undoubtedly one of the best directors that India has ever seen. Star actors like Mithun Chakroborty, Aparna Sen, Konkona Sensharma have powerful performances in ‘Titli’, which is a love story different than others in all dimensions.
Chokher Bali (2003)- Disney+Hotstar:
Another one from Rituparno Ghosh, ‘Chokher Bali’ is a tragic tale written by Rabindranath Tagore and perfectly adapted into a movie by Ghosh, the master. Aishwarya Rai, Raima Sen, Prasenjit Chatterjee play the characters who somehow form a love triangle when the beautiful widow, played by Aishwarya comes to their lives.
Dristhikone (2018) – Zee5:Directed by Koushik Ganguly, one of the most creative directors of India, ‘Drishtikone’ tells the story of a blind lawyer played by Prasenjit and his client Rituparna who has to stay in touch with him for a long running case. This movie had brought the magical pair of Prasenjit and Rituparna to the big screen after long time.
Bishorjon (2017)- Zee5:Another one from the master storyteller Koushik Ganguly, ‘Bishorjon’ stars Abir Chatterjee and Jaya Ahsan in leading roles. It tells the a cross border love story between a Muslim Indian and a widowed Hindu from Bangladesh. Koushik Ganguly himself plays a very important character in the film which got many awards including the National Award For Best Bengali Cinema.
