Netflix was the first international streaming service to come to India way back in January 2016. Besides acquiring third-party movies, Netflix has concurrently released a number of original Indian movies as well since the year 2018. In this article, we have compiled a list of five must-watch Netflix India’s original movies released ever since the OTT platform’s arrival in India.
5. Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl
The biographical drama film is inspired by the life of Gunjan Saxena, who is regarded as the first woman Air Force officer to fly Cheetah helicopters in a combat zone during the Kargil War. Jhanvi Kapoor essayed the role of an Indian Air Force pilot and the Kargil War veteran in the film. The film also features Pankaj Tripathi, Angad Bedi, Manav Vij, and Vineet Kumar Singh in important roles. Besides their performances, the portrayal of the relationship between Gunjan Saxena and her father Lieutenant Colonel Anup Saxena (played by Pankaj Tripathi) was one of the film’s highlights.
4. Raat Akeli Hai
Helmed by Honey Trehan, this slow-burner Netflix film revolves around the police investigation conducted by a cop (played by Nawazuddin Siddique) following the high-profile murder of an affluent politician amidst the victim’s secretive family. The film was a critic’s darling and eventually won two Filmfare OTT awards for the Best Actor and the Best Film categories. The movie also featured Radhika Apte, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Shweta Tripathi, and Aditya Srivastav.
3. Soni
‘Soni’ was premiered at the prestigious Venice International Film Festival where it received a standing ovation from the festival audience. The film revolves around the lives and inter-personal relationship between two female police officers (played by Geetika Vidya Ohlyan and Saloni Batra) and showcases crimes against women in Delhi and how these two cops handle these cases in their own way, while dealing with gender issues in their own lives. It’s an ultra-realistic film almost overlapping arthouse cinema, nevertheless, deserves a viewing. The film was apparently made after painstaking research on the intricacies of the working of the police department.
2. The Disciple
Chaitanya Tamhane’s critically acclaimed Marathi language drama ‘The Disciple’ narrates the story of Sharad Nerulkar (played by Aditya Modak), who has dedicated his life to becoming an Indian classical music vocalist. However, he begins to think that, despite his devotion, will he achieve the level of excellence he is aiming for. The film was executive produced by ‘Gravity’ director Alphonso Cuaron.
1. Minnal Murali
Directed by Basil Joseph, ‘Minnal Murali’ is set during the 1990s period and follows the superhero origin story of a small-town tailor named Jaison (played by Tovino Thomas). When Jaison is struck by a bolt of lightning (in a rare astronomical event), it bestows him special powers like super speed, extraordinary strength, telekinesis, and extreme agility. Thereafter, Jaison embraces his powers to become a local superhero and assumes his titular alter-ego of Minnal Murali to fight his evil counterpart and to protect the people. We have placed this film in the top spot because of its fairly rich entertainment value.
