5 Covid Released Malayalam Thrillers To Stream This Weekend

Mollywood filmmakers really struggled to find OTT platforms willing to stream their content at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Fast forward almost 20 months later, and the Malayalam industry is a different monster altogether. The South Indian film industry has multiple tie-ups with various OTT platforms such as Netflix, ZEE5, Amazon Prime Video, etc. However, with the idea of a third possible statewide lockdown currently being entertained by the State Government, we will not be surprised if more Malayalam films get released directly for streaming. For now, check out five Malayalam thrillers that dropped directly for streaming during the coronavirus pandemic and its “variant spread”:

Kuruthi
This unexpected Prithviraj thriller took the OTT world by storm upon its release, last year. The film is a story that is rooted in the ongoing tensions that are happening within the Islamic community and the resulting fall out from all that tension happening within the country (and around the globe) as well. Check out this drama thriller on Amazon Prime Video.

Kaanekkaane
Tovino Thomas made his direct-to-OTT debut in this film, but surprisingly, he was not the film’s lead. That was played by Suraj Venjaramoodu, and this movie should be seen for both of their acting performances. A slow, sullen film quickly becomes an unexpected investigative thriller that has audiences at the edge of their seats. Check it out on SonyLIV.

Malik
This list was always going to have a Fahadh Faasil film, and we picked one of his best onscreen performances so far. The film has managed to earn rave reviews from critics and subscribers alike for its brilliant acting performances, screenplay, direction and music. This movie can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

Minnal Murali
This movie is another movie that was always making this list. The first-ever Malayalam superhero thriller was released on Christmas eve last year and it was an instant success. The Mollywood film got rave reviews for its script and acting, particularly for the portrayal of the villain. The movie is currently streaming on Netflix.

Drishyam 2
The “oldest film” on this list, ‘Drishyam 2’, is a crime drama thriller sequel that is set six years after the events of ‘Drishyam’. Georgekutty and his family undergo scrutiny again after a new police inspector takes charge in their village. This movie is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
