India’s first werewolf movie ‘Bhediya’ starring Varun Dhawan in the titular role is all set to release in theatres on 25th November. The film’s trailer has got Indian cinephiles quite excited. But as there is still more than a month left for Bhediya’s release, we have compiled a list of five post-2k creature-horror movies you can watch on Indian OTT platforms.
We have intentionally tried to include a blend of popular and relatively underappreciated films for this list. Happy Diwali and happy bingeing everyone.
Rogue, 2007 (Streaming on MX Player, Lionsgate Play)
The underrated independent Australian horror flick follows a travel journalist named Pete McKell (played by Michael Vartan). During an assignment in the Australian outback, Pete joins a tourist group cruise led by a female guide (Radha Mitchell) in a crocodile infested river. But the situation takes a deadly turn when Pete and other tourists get trapped in the river after being followed by a massive 25-feet man-eating crocodile.
Tumbbad, 2018 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
Set in the 1920s, the technically marvellous and visually opulent film is essentially a simple tale of greed, beautifully disguised as an unadulterated horror film. It follows the story of Vinayak Rao (played by Sohum Shah) and his perpetual greed for the apparently eternal wealth that is stored underneath a crumbling castle. However, to earn a few gold coins, every time Vinayak Rao must confront a dreadful creature named ‘Hastar’.
Prey, 2022 (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
Helmed by Dan Trachtenberg (Director – 10 Cloverfield Lane), the gripping film revolves around a highly skilled female warrior Naru, who battles with a much more advanced alien predator in order to protect her tribe and to prove her mettle. It’s a prequel to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1987 cult sci-fi action movie ‘Predator’.
Ghost Stories – Segment: Monster, 2020 (Streaming on Netflix)
The short segment titled ‘Monster’ in the anthology horror film ‘Ghost Stories’ was directed by Dibakar Bannerjee (Khosla Ka Ghosla, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!). The film’s story follows a regular, middle-class man (played by Sukant Goel), who arrives in a small place called Bees Ghara. After reaching the desolate place, he finds out that the town residents have been cannibalized by a bigger town and the remaining residents are being hunted by a bear-life flesh-eating creature.
The Mist, 2007 (Streaming on Netflix, Lionsgate Play)
Helmed by Frank Darabont (Director – The Shawshank Redemption), the film’s plot follows the Drayton family which lives in the small Maine town. One night, an intense storm hits the town after which a mysterious mist engulfs the whole area. The family gets trapped inside a supermarket where the town residents learn about killer creatures from some other dimension apparently emerging out of the mist.
