Hyperlink is a word made popular by film critic Roger Ebert while reviewing the film ‘Syriana’ in 2005. Hyperlink cinema is a multi-linear narrative style where multiple and often parallel storylines and their characters are in some way linked to each other and which may interweave, intersect, or diverge later in the movie. Crash, 2004 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
Helmed by Paul Haggis, the post 9/11 intense crime drama follows the story of multiple LA-based characters like a district attorney (Brendan Fraser) and his spouse (Sandra Bullock), a racist cop (a brilliant Matt Dillon), a well-off couple, etc. and how their lives intersect amidst various conflicts. All stories unveil and overlap over a period of 36 hours.
Life in a Metro, 2007 (Streaming on Netflix)
The romantic drama revolves around the fast-paced and eventful lives of several people – all living in a metro. The stories range from a cheating husband, a woman falling for the wrong guy, office crush, an elderly couple’s romance, etc. Helmed by Anurag Basu, the film features a talented cast which includes Dharmendra, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Sharman Joshi, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Shiney Ahuja, amongst others.
Vedam, 2010 (Streaming on Sun NXT)
The film’s plot follows five disparate characters – cable operator Raju, prostitute Saroja, an aspiring rockstar Vivek, a man named Raheemuddin, a struggling weaver Ramulu and their stories intersect amidst the backdrop of a terrorist attack. The critically acclaimed movie features Allu Arjun, Anushka Shetty, Manoj Bajpai, and Manchu Manoj, amongst others.
Contagion, 2011 (Streaming on Netflix)
Steven Soderbergh’s gripping medical thriller revolves around a deadly and contagious virus that is spreading across the globe at a rapid rate. The plot follows the efforts of the medical community which races against time to contain the virus and to soon find a cure to end the global pandemic. The movie featured an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Bryan Cranston, etc.
Vantage Point, 2008 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube, Apple – Rent)
The political action thriller movie revolves around an assassination attempt on the US President in Spain from the point of view of the film’s different characters and their perspectives. The incident is shot on a tourist’s video camera which helps unearth the mystery. It featured Dennis Quaid, Forest Whitaker, Matthew Fox, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, amongst others.
