It’s Sunday and like always, we are back with our handpicked selection of weekend binge watch recommendations. This article is a follow-up of our last weekend’s write-up and features another list of five must watch movies with a mind-bending premise/narrative/climax. We have tried to include a mix of popular and relatively underrated films for the list. You can stream these mind-bending films on various Indian OTT platforms as mentioned below. Happy Bingeing.
The Usual Suspects, 1995 (Streaming on Netflix)
Helmed by Bryan Singer, the riveting mystery thriller revolves around the interrogation of a small-time con man Kint (Kevin Spacey), who tries to convince the authorities about the existence of a mastermind crime lord named Keyser Soze. He further explains how Keyser made him and his four partners-in-crime commit a multi-million heist which led to a deadly explosion. But there is much more to the story than meets the eye.
Annihilation, 2018 (Streaming on Netflix)
The film follows a cellular biologist (played by Natalie Portman) leading an expedition into an ever-expanding mysterious zone that is engulfed by a catastrophic alien presence. A thought-provoking movie directed by Alex Garland, the film’s visual opulence and philosophical premise will manage to keep you engaged throughout.
Donnie Darko, 2001 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
The science fiction film features Jake Gyllenhaal in the titular role of an emotionally disturbed teenager, who luckily escapes a strange accident while sleepwalking following a voice. He begins to see a mysterious six-foot rabbit named Frank but only Donny can see him. Frank manipulates Donny into executing some crimes, with devastating consequences.
Source Code, 2011 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video)
An Army Captain and helicopter pilot (Jake Gyllenhaal) is sent on a mission to identify a bomber in a commuter train that is the target of the bombing. But there’s a catch: he has just eight minutes to find out. Another catch: he can relive those eight minutes multiple times, that is, every time he dies in the train explosion. Based on the concept of alternate reality, it’s an edge-of-the-seat thriller by Duncan Jones and also features Vera Farmiga in a nice supporting role.
Déjà vu, 2006 (Streaming on Google Play, YouTube – PPV)
Directed by Late Tony Scott (Ridley Scott’s brother and director of ‘Man on Fire’ and ‘Enemy of the State’), Déjà Vu is an investigative murder-mystery which beautifully incorporates the concept of time-travel or time-loop in a never-seen-before way. The film starring Denzel Washington (in supreme form) and Jim Caviezel (lead actor – Person of Interest), follows an ATF special agent’s pursuit to find the man responsible for a lethal ferry explosion. You won’t regret watching this one.
