There is an old adage “Truth is stranger than fiction”. Well, it is not only stranger but many times it’s even more interesting than fiction. The same holds true in the case of movies that are based on real-life stories and incidents.
This article is a follow-up to our last two weeks’ listicles (see links below) and we have handpicked for our readers another list of five more must-watch Indian and foreign movies based on real-life which you can watch on Netflix OTT platform.
The film is based on the life story of brilliant American Mathematician and Nobel Prize winner John Nash and how he made some incredible achievements in his career despite dealing with schizophrenia. The lead role was played by Russell Crowe and the film was directed by Ron Howard.
Helmed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film features Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Indian actor Sanjay Dutt. It showcases various important aspects in the eventful life of the actor right from his movie break, his drug addiction, his relationship with his mother Nargis (Manisha Koirala), his father Sunil Dutt (Paresh Rawal), and his best friend (Vicky Kaushal), to his contact with the underworld, arrest in relation to 1993 bomb blasts, and his subsequent comeback with Hirani’s own film ‘Munnabhai MBBS’.
Helmed by virtuoso filmmaker Ron Howard, the film narrates the events of the aborted 1970 Apollo 13 space mission to the moon. When the ill-fated flight’s oxygen tanks explode, the crew Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon), and Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) abort the moon landing. The stranded astronauts and NASA must now find a way to bring the crew safely back to Earth.
Manjhi: The Mountain Man (2015)
Directed by veteran filmmaker Ketan Mehta (Mirch Masala, Mangal Pandey), the film is based on the life of a Bihar-based laborer named Dashrath Manjhi aka Mountain Man, which was played by acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
The story revolves around how Manjhi carves a path through the mountain using only a hammer and a chisel for twenty-two years. He began the arduous work after the death of his wife (Radhika Apte) because of difficult access to a medical facility.
Helmed by Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn, ‘Into the Wild’ is an on-screen adaptation of John Krakauer’s 1996 book of the same name. The film chronicles the true story of an American adventurer Chris McCandless, who traveled across North America and later on hitchhiked into the Alaskan wilderness hoping for a nomadic existence. Emile Hirsch had essayed the titular role in the film.
