June the Pride Month is here. LGBT community celebrates this month for recognition and representation in the society. We have infinite examples of Indian movies that stereotypes the community but thankfully, there are some great examples too.
1. Brokeback Mountain – Netflix
Based on Annie Proulx’s short story, this critically acclaimed film directed by Ang Lee delves into the complex and forbidden love between two cowboys, Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal). Set against the backdrop of the picturesque Wyoming mountains, “Brokeback Mountain” portrays the struggles and sacrifices faced by these characters as they navigate their lives and love in a society that doesn’t readily accept them. This emotionally gripping film has touched the hearts of millions and remains a classic in LGBT cinema.
2. Aligarh – JioCinema
“Aligarh” is a poignant Hindi film based on the true story of Dr. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras (portrayed by Manoj Bajpayee), a renowned professor who faced discrimination and legal battles due to his sexual orientation. Directed by Hansal Mehta, this powerful film sheds light on the unjust treatment and stigma faced by the LGBTQ+ community in India. It sensitively explores Dr. Siras’ struggle for his right to privacy and his fight against homophobia, making it a thought-provoking watch that leaves a lasting impact.
3. Margarita with a Straw – JioCinema
Directed by Shonali Bose, “Margarita with a Straw” is an inspiring coming-of-age film that revolves around Laila (Kalki Koechlin), a young woman with cerebral palsy. Laila’s journey takes her on a quest for self-discovery and love as she explores her bisexuality. This heartwarming and honest portrayal of a bisexual character navigating her desires and relationships is a testament to the power of embracing one’s true self and overcoming societal barriers.
4. Portrait of a Lady on Fire – Prime Video
Set in 18th-century France, “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” is a visually stunning film directed by Céline Sciamma. The story follows a young painter, Marianne (Noémie Merlant), who is commissioned to paint a wedding portrait of Héloïse (Adèle Haenel), a woman who resists the idea of marriage. As Marianne secretly observes Héloïse to capture her likeness, an intimate and passionate relationship develops between them. This exquisite film explores themes of desire, freedom, and the complexities of love, delivering a captivating and emotionally resonant experience.
5. Tár – Prime Video Store
“Tár,” an astounding film starring Cate Blanchett is about a musician and her fall. You are going to witness one of the greatest performances in cinema history in Tár.
The movie revolves around the character and her obsession more than the LGBT theme but it is a film worth watching.
