5 Must-Watch Movies Which Couldn’t Win The ‘Best Picture’ Oscar

The 2024 edition of the Academy Awards, more popularly known as the Oscars, will be held on 10th March 2024 in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Cinephiles across the globe are waiting with bated breath for the announcement of the winners including the ‘Best Picture’ award. For this write-up, we have compiled a list of five must-watch movies, which were nominated in the ‘Best Picture’ category over all these years but couldn’t win the coveted golden trophy.

Pulp Fiction, 1994 (Streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video)
Helmed by Quentin Tarantino, the crime drama movie revolves around four interesting stories of that of two hitmen (John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson), a gangster’s wife (Uma Thurman), a down-and-out boxer (Bruce Willis) and a pair of robbers (Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer). The film’s only fault was that it came out in the same year as ‘Forrest Gump’.

Ford v Ferrari, 2019 (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
Directed by James Mangold, the biographical sports drama follows an American car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon), who is hired by Ford. He teams up with a maverick British driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale) to outperform the reigning champion Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France 1966.

Traffic, 2000 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Lionsgate Play)
Steven Soderbergh’s stylishly executed crime drama revolves around America’s war against drugs from the point of view of interrelated characters including the National Drug Control Policy head, his drug addicted daughter, a Mexican policeman, and the affluent wife of an imprisoned drug lord, etc. The movie features an ensemble cast that includes Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones, Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, and Dennis Quaid, amongst others.
Lost to: Gladiator

Babel, 2006 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Lionsgate Play)
Directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu, the multi-narrative psychological drama features four interconnected stories and characters set in different parts of the world like Morocco, Japan, Mexico, and the United States. The stories include a married couple (Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett) on a vacation gone wrong, a Moroccan herder and his sons who are given a gun, a deaf Japanese teenage girl, and a Mexican house help who takes two kids across the border for her son’s marriage.
Lost to: The Departed

Lion, 2016 (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Lionsgate Play)
Based on the non-fiction book ‘A Long Way Home’, the film narrates the incredible true story of a five-year-old Indian boy Saroo (played by Dev Patel) who accidentally gets separated from his family and lands in the far-off city Kolkata. Eventually, he is adopted by an Australian family and relocates. Many years later, he uses Google Earth technology coupled with his faded childhood memories and makes it his mission to find his original home and long-lost family in India.
