5 Must Watch Sci-Fi Movies Streaming on Amazon Prime Video Store

A well-made science fiction movie makes us ponder the incredible ways in which technology can affect us in the near or far future or in an alternate reality. Besides providing insightful entertainment, they also educate us on some level. The icing on the cake is the breath-taking visuals we are treated with. For this article, we have compiled a list of five must-watch science fiction movies which you can watch on stream (PPV) on the Amazon Prime Video store.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

It’s been more than 50 years and Stanley Kubrick’s cult venture is still regarded as the benchmark in sci-fi filmmaking. The film was inspired by Arthur C. Clarke’s short story ‘The Sentinel’. After a mysterious black object is found on the lunar surface by mankind, a group of astronauts is sent on a space mission to Jupiter. During the voyage, things go awry when the ship’s artificially intelligent computer begins to take control.

The Thing (1982)

It’s a critically acclaimed sci-fi horror flick starring Kurt Russel that revolves around a group of American researchers stationed in Antarctica. On their base, the research team encounters an alien lifeform that has the ability to shapeshift into the exact form of its victims. Tensions ensue because of the sudden lack of trust because now, any one of them could be the alien antagonist. Helmed by legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, the movie has achieved a cult following of sorts amongst horror aficionados.

Life (2017)

The sci-fi survival thriller follows a team of scientists aboard the International Space Station who find evidence of life on Mars. In their attempt to learn more about the rapidly growing organism, they become the target of the ultra-intelligent and powerful new discovery as they fight for their lives inside the ship. While in space, they must stop the lifeform at any cost before it unleashes terror on Earth. The film featured Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, and Rebecca Ferguson, amongst others.

Children of Men (2006)

Alfonso Cuaron’s dystopian thriller is set in the year 2027 when mankind is on the verge of extinction because of a mysterious fertility defect in all women. In such chaotic circumstances, when one woman miraculously gets pregnant, a disillusioned activist (Clive Owen) must transport the world’s last hope to a safe place.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Helmed by Doug Liman (Director – The Bourne Identity), this action thriller revolves around an untrained soldier (played by Tom Cruise) who is forced to continually live and die the same day amidst the backdrop of a violent alien invasion battlefront. One day, he meets a highly trained soldier (played by Emily Blunt), who herself has gone through the same experience. How they try to get out of the seemingly infinite time-loop and overthrow the alien invasion forms the film’s primary premise.
