Argentine crime and suspense drama “La chica que limpia” or “The Cleaning Lady” has suddenly become hot property in streaming circles. We say this because, at last count, there are five different remakes of the 2017 series in the works!
Indian content producer – creator Siddharth Kumar Tewary is remaking “La chica que limpia” into a series for Indian audiences. Tewary is the founder of Swastika Productions, one of the biggest production houses in the Indian TV industry. He has earlier produced hit shows like Mahabharat, Karmaphal Daata Shani, Porus, Ram Siya Ke Luv Kush, RadhaKrishn, among others. The cast and crew of Siddharth Kumar Tewary’s Indian remake of The Cleaning Lady is not known yet.
The other remakes of The Cleaning Lady that are in the works are the Portuguese and Spanish adaptations of the series by Barcelona-based company Fasten Films. The company has opted the remake rights of the Argentine original, with work to begin soon.
Warner Bros has commissioned an English language pilot of “La chica que limpia” or “The Cleaning Lady” for streaming in the USA. Lastly, Turner Latin America and BTF Media are together producing a Mexican remake of the series, to release in Latin America.
The original 2017 Argentine show “La chica que limpia” or “The Cleaning Lady” was created by Córdoba’s Jaque Content. It streamed on video on demand on Cine.ar Play, the VOD platform of the Incaa Argentine film and TV institute.
The suspense and crime drama has won several awards. Most prominently, it won the Martín Fierro Federal Award for best series. It was also pre-selected for the 2018 International Emmy Awards. The story revolves around single mother Rosa, who moves to the US to get medical help for her seriously ill son.
With no help forthcoming via legal channels, she takes to an unconventional route. She becomes ‘the cleaning lady’ for a notorious crime organization, with a unique ability – she cleans up any crime scene spotlessly, leaving no trace of the crime, thus keeping her mafia bosses safe from prosecution, and happy. As Rosa grapples with the immorality of her work, she justifies her actions with the motivation of getting her seriously ill son cured.
The Cleaning Lady is a limited series of eight episodes in its lone season. It has elements of suspense, thrill and intrigue, along with being a compelling crime drama. The fun begins when the police close in on Rosa and she manages to outsmart them with her smartness and skill.
