A well-made science fiction movie makes us ponder the incredible ways in which technology can affect us in the near or far future or in an alternate reality. Besides providing insightful entertainment, they also educate us on some level. The icing on the cake is the breath-taking visuals we are treated with.
Some eminent filmmakers have given us stellar sci-fi films like The Matrix, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Interstellar, and Gravity – to name a few. But for this article, we have handpicked a list of the five science fiction films you might have missed, which are streaming on the Netflix OTT platform.
Chappie (2015)
The dystopian sci-fi flick directed by Neill Blomkamp is set in the near future in Johannesburg where crime is controlled by a mechanized police force comprising robots. When one such police robot named Chappie (Sharlto Copley) is stolen and reprogrammed, the robot becomes the first of its kind to gain the ability to think and feel. The movie features Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, and Sigourney Weaver.
Based on a book by H. G. Wells, the film starts off with a woman (Elisabeth Moss) running away from the clutches of her rich and controlling boyfriend (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). Later, she learns that her boyfriend has committed suicide. But after a series of strange events, she begins to suspect that her supposedly deceased boyfriend has somehow come back to haunt her. When nobody believes her, she decides to fight back an entity she can’t even see, on her own.
Mirage (2018)
Helmed by Oriol Paulo (Director – The Invisible Guest), the sci-fi mystery Spanish film follows the story of a married working woman named Vera. One night, while watching an old video during an electrical storm, Vera somehow connects with a boy named Nico, who had died 25 years ago. She saves the boy from the past from his impending death, but the incident changes her reality. She learns that in the new timeline, her daughter is not even born. Now she must fight back to get her daughter back into her life.
Arrival (2016)
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is known for remaking Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner’, this sci-fi slow burner features Amy Adams as a linguistic expert, who is called up by the US Army to communicate with the aliens using her unique skills, in a race against time, to decode the mystery. The film also starred Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker in important roles.
Spectral (2016)
The sci-fi actioner is set amidst the backdrop of the war-torn European country of Moldova. In the midst of the chaos, an engineer named Mark Clyne lands in Moldova where he teams up with a special ops team to fight against a deadly, invisible enemy by using an advanced hyperspectral imaging technology.
