The south-Indian film industry has been taking leaps and bounds when it comes to creating exciting and riveting content and though it may not get as much popularity as Bollywood does, they have time and again produced cinematic gems that have left us wanting for more. Therefore, we bring you a list of 5 South-Indian psychological thrillers that you should add to your watchlist.
Psycho
Psycho is the story of a serial killer who abducts women and then beheads them mercilessly. His prime targets are beautiful woman and prostitutes.
Mysskin is known for his unique and experimental content, but he takes it up a notch with ‘Psycho’ which has to be one of the goriest and darkest south- Indian psychological thrillers that you will see in a long time. Mysskin created this movie as a tribute to Alfred Hitchcock, and the visuals and imagery are really disturbing.
This one is not for the faint of heart but what really stands out is that there is context to every murder and you clearly understand by the end of the film why the killer did all those gruesome and heinous acts.
Ratsasan
Ratsasan is the story of a person who wanted to be a filmmaker, but nobody was willing to give him a shot. When there seemed to be no way out, he takes up a job in the police force and uses his previous knowledge of psychopaths to chase down a killer.
Ratsasan is a unique film and highlights the inability of the higher officials to take a petty officer seriously. The whole film is crafted so well that the visuals in some instances will take your breath away, but while it may not be the most elaborate one, it is surely one that is worth your time.
Awe
This movie chronicles the story of several characters who are linked together in some form or the other. Every character highlights some pressing notion about society, and you would not guess the ending in a million years.
We want to tell you more about the story, but we may land up ruining the plot. Apart from the storyline, the fantastic set design, ensemble cast and riveting performances all on a tight budget will make you fall in love with this film even more.
Trance
The story of how Viju a motivational speaker makes it big by taking on a totally new avatar of a world-renowned preacher is sure to send chills down your spine as Fahadh Fasil gives you a breath-taking performance.
Trance dangles on the lines of being a drama, but the psychological aspect in this film along with the visuals stand out. The direction, cinematography and background music coupled with a unique theme, is what makes this movie such a great work. This unique psychological thriller may have tanked at the box office, but if you want a genuinely good attempt at experimental cinema, then you should at least give it a try.
Game over
Game over is a story of Swapna, a game designer who suffers PTSD and has to live alone with her housemaid. Things take a sudden turn when a killer enters the house and forces her to play a game. Win, and you survive.
Game over is another thriller with a unique concept. It has power-packed performances from the likes of Tapsee Pannu who rarely fails to impress us with her roles.
We realize that just coming up with 5 thrillers may not do justice to so many out there, but we have tried to place some of the most unique and experimental thrillers on this list. Films like Athiran, Varathan and Kaithi are some of our honourable mentions.
If you think that you have any more south Indian thriller which should be on this list, please feel free to leave a comment below.
