Set against the backdrop of a world infected with zombies, the film follows proficient actor Martin Freeman as a father of a one-year-old daughter trying to protect his family in rural Australia from these killer creatures. The film has the right blend of horror and emotional elements.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (Streaming on SonyLIV)
Helmed by Scott Derrickson (Director, Doctor Strange), this underrated horror flick beautifully balances both the horror and courtroom-drama genres. The film follows an agnostic lawyer (Laura Linney) and how she tries to defend a priest (Tom Wilkinson) arrested for suspicion of the murder of a young girl named Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) while performing an exorcism on her. The film is reportedly based on a true story.
The Blair Witch Project (Streaming on Lionsgate Play)
The film follows three students who venture into a forest to make a documentary on the Blair Witch legend, but never come back. A year later, their spine-chilling camera footage is found, showing the viewers about their mysterious disappearance. It was one of the earlier films to effectively deploy the found-footage filmmaking technique. The film, although well-executed, was slightly ahead of its time. Watch it if the hand-held camera technique does not bother you.
Quarantine (Streaming on SonyLIV)
Another found-footage horror film on this list. The film stars Jennifer Carpenter (of Dexter fame) as a television reporter trapped inside a quarantined building infested with humans who have somehow turned into menacing killer creatures.
The Ritual (Streaming on Netflix)
A few months after their friend’s death, four friends go on a group hiking trip in northern Sweden. The group loses their way as they venture deeper into the woods and to make things worse, they realize that they are being chased by a deadly creature. Can they get out of the forest alive?
