5 Underrated Horror Movies on Netflix You Might Have Missed

5 Underrated Horror Movies on Netflix You Might Have Missed

Horror has invariably been a film genre that has the ability to transport the viewer into a different world altogether and has always had a cult following amongst genre aficionados. In this article, we have shortlisted for you a list of five underrated horror movies which are currently streaming on the Netflix OTT platform. So, grab your popcorn this Christmas weekend and enjoy these films alone in a dark room to maximum effect. But, at your own risk.

Brightburn (2019)

A supervillain horror genre movie is a rare blend and ‘Brightburn’ is an exception. The film starts off with the arrival of a mysterious child from another world who crash lands on Earth and is adopted by a childless couple.

Sounds like another Superman-ish story but the narrative drifts into a much darker film because the child is not quite the hero the audience will be rooting for. He begins to use his powers to control the world around him and his mother must find his weakness to be the only hope for mankind.

Crawl (2019)

‘Crawl’ is a survival horror movie helmed by French filmmaker Alexandre Aja, who had also directed films such as ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ and the more recent ‘Oxygen’. The film revolves around a swimming champ Haley, who gets trapped with her father in the basement of their Florida house in the midst of a Category-5 hurricane. She must use her skills to save herself and her injured father from being hunted by deadly alligators.

Cargo (2017)

Set against the backdrop of a world infected with zombies, the film follows proficient actor Martin Freeman (Sherlock, Fargo) as a father of a one-year-old daughter trying to protect his family in rural Australia from these killer creatures. The film has the right blend of horror and emotional elements.

Bulbbul (2020)

It’s a visually aesthetic period horror film set in the nineteenth century Bengal Presidency. The movie follows a five-year-old child bride Bulbbul (played by Tripti Dimri) and her growing friendship with her husband’s (Rahul Bose) youngest brother Satya (Avinash Tiwary).

Bulbbul’s life takes an unexpected turn when Satya is sent to London by her jealous husband. When he comes back twenty years later, he finds an eerie change in Bulbbul’s personality and also investigates mysterious killings happening in the village.

Orphan (2009)

We save the best for the last and a film like ‘Orphan’ deserves the respect. The movie revolves around a grieving couple (Vera Farmiga & Peter Sarsgaard) who have lost their baby. Things go from bad to worse when they decide to adopt a seemingly innocent nine-year-old sensible but mysterious orphan girl named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). The film’s prequel titled ‘Orphan: First Kill’ is currently under production.
