5 Underrated Indian Shows On OTT That Deserved More Love!

1. She (Netflix)
Created by celebrated film director Imtiaz Ali and headlined by Aditi Pohankar, ‘She’ is the story of a timid, female cop whose road to empowerment is an undercover assignment to expose a drug ring. The writing may be a little weak in places, but Aditi, with a charming screen presence is a delight to watch! It’s her transition, from a demure cop in modest surroundings to a bold agent exploring and accepting her sexual side, that wins you over. If haven’t seen already, do give it a watch!

2. Marzi (Voot)
Marzi is a thriller, crime series starring Aahana Kumra and Rajeev Khandelwal, that is essentially a classic suspense tale of ‘he-said-she-said’. Based on the novel ‘Liar’, it takes on the subject of sexual consent and is totally gripping from the word go! The 5-part series revolves around a school teacher (Kumra), accusing her date (Khandelwal) of raping her. What follows is an edgy, riveting tale of lies and deceit, leaving the viewer hooked on till the very end to know who’s telling the truth. A must-watch especially for fans of the lead cast. Despite some draggy, unnecessary bits focusing on secondary characters, Kumra and Khandelwal are able to keep you glued to their portrayals and draw you to their side with their convincing and compelling performances.

All in all, a binge-worthy show that’ll leave the viewers hungry for more!

3. Queen (MX Player)
With an IMDb rating of 8.8 and loosely based on Late actress and politician Jayalalitha, this story is the journey of Shakthi Sheshadri- a young, brilliant student forced to become an actress, and after attaining super-stardom, wishes to enter politics. Although originally a Tamil series, it was released in many languages including Hindi and even premiered on television.

A great storyline and stellar performances are enough reasons to binge watch this show. All 3 actresses (Ramya Krishnan, Anjana Jayaprakash & Anikha Surendran) playing Shakthi, at different periods of her life, do in fact bring to life the story of one of the most prominent figures across South India and fans can’t wait for season 2! The show wasn’t perhaps promoted well in other regions, hence not many from other parts of India ended up watching it, although its available for free on MX Player! If not already seen, do give this show a watch and you will not regret it!

4. Bhaukaal (MX Player)
Crime. Guns. Gang wars. UP- the crime capital of India. You think you have this show figured out? Think again. Bhaukaal starring TV heartthrob Mohit Raina in the lead, with Abhimanyu Singh, Siddhant Kapoor and Bidita Bag, is the story of real life hero- IPS Officer Navniet Sekera.

Set in Muzaffarnagar, the plot essentially revolves around two goon gangs at war and Officer Sekera being sent in to cleanse the city. What stands out in this series is a fairly gripping storyline and good performances overall. Although some parts may be predictable, if action and gangster stories are your thing, this show is definitely for you! All in all, a show worth your time and we can’t wait for season 2 that’s expected to arrive sometime next year!

5. A Simple Murder (SonyLiv)
Headlined by Amit Sial and Zeeshan Ayub, this unusual, dark crime-comedy is a surprisingly cringe-worthy show! The story revolves around a failed entrepreneur’s ‘simple’ contract to kill a politician’s daughter for money. Post this ‘simple murder’ gone wrong, ensues a gripping tale of greed and betrayal. Shot in all corners of Delhi and essentially a crime thriller about a bag of money, it’s quite the roller coaster! Top-notch performances and a unique comic timing make this quirky thriller an absolutely entertaining watch.
