Six Indian films have won awards at the “Monthly Awards” category of the Cannes World Film Festival. The awards are for the month of July 2021, spanning various categories. The winning films will be eligible to participate in the annual competition of the Film Festival.
For the uninitiated, the Cannes World Film Festival runs a monthly awards competition for films from all over the world, in a wide range of categories – feature films, short and ultra short films, indie films, documentary films, experimental films, music videos, commercials, animations, low-budget films, and lots more. Winners are announced every month, across genres and categories. All the monthly winners of the Cannes World Film Festival are automatically entered into the annual competition for an opportunity to have their film screened at a theatre in Cannes, France. Out of these, select films are chosen as the final nominees for the year, and are screened at a theatre in Cannes at the annual Cannes World Film Festival. The Cannes World Film Festival is conducted in association with FilmFreeway and IMDb.
The six Indian films that have won awards at Cannes World Film Festival Monthly Awards are –
1. Sab Rab De Bande – Best Social Justice Short Award
It is a short documentary film, directed by Sukhdeep Singh, which focuses on the challenges faced by LGBTQ Sikhs. The film also won an honorable mention as Best LGBTQ Film.
2. Chuzhal – Best Supernatural Film Award
An atmospheric horror film that centres on five youngsters at a hill resort, who are haunted by an unknown evil entity. The Malayalam film is directed by debutant director, Biju Maani, and stars Sreenath Gopinath, Jaffar Idukki, Sanju Prabhakar, Abin Mary, Gazal Ahamed, and RJ Nilja.
3. Decoding Shankar – Best Biographical Feature Film Award
A biographical film on singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan, directed by Deepti Pillay Sivan.
4. Exchange Offer – Best Senior Film Award
Starring M.K. Raina, Surendra Rajan and Taher Shabbir, the film is written and directed by Saunak Mitra. It is a heartwarming film that looks back at life from the point of view of a retired school principal.
5. Five Point Three – Best Indie Feature Film Award
Directed by Vaibhav Dixit, the film centres on the protagonist Gagan, who’s going through an existential crisis. A chance meeting with a young boy makes him aware of his unknown calibre as a musician.
6. Mithilesh Gunasekaran – Best Young Filmmaker Award
The Malaysia-based Indian filmmaker won the award for his documentary titled Garu.
