It’s Sunday and, like always, we’re back with our handpicked weekend binge-watch list for you. For this article, we have compiled a list of five offbeat and rather underrated romantic movies which you can stream in India on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform. So, here we go.
Helmed by Habib Faisal, the film is set amidst the politically charged backdrop of a rural town with two warring families: the Chauhans and the Qureshis. In such a situation, a fatherless boy Parma (Arjun Kapoor) from the Chauhan family falls for the feisty Zoya (Parineeti Chopra) from the rival family and all hell breaks loose as their romance begins to blossom.
Helmed by Luv Ranjan of ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’ fame, the film’s story revolves around a girl (Nusrat Bharucha) who belongs to a conservative family. Despite her unwillingness to get married because of romantic feelings for her college mate (Kartik Aaryan), still she reluctantly marries another man of her parents’ choice. With an unhappy married life and a dominating husband, will she be able to gather courage for another chance to follow her dreams?
Based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same name, the movie follows a carefree and popular high school senior Landon Carter (Shane West), who is forced to do after-school community service as a punishment after a prank goes wrong. There, he meets a shy woman Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore) and eventually they develop feelings for each other. But their sweet relationship is threatened after Landon learns about a terrible secret relating to Jamie.
Based on O. Henry’s short story ‘The Last Leaf’, ‘Lootera’ is a beautifully crafted period drama helmed by the gifted filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane. The story follows a conman (played by Ranveer Singh) posing as an archaeologist, who falls in love with a Zamindar’s beautiful daughter (played by Sonakshi Sinha). ‘Mirzapur’ actor Vikrant Massey had adeptly essayed the role of Ranveer Singh’s sidekick.
Directed by Shirish Kunder, the offbeat romantic drama features Salman Khan as a once-famous actor Suhaan, who gets a divorce notice from her wife Piya (Preity Zinta). That’s when he is visited by his former nerdy college mate and now a NASA astronaut Agastya (Akshay Kumar), who was madly in love with Piya. Suhaan tries to manipulate Agastya into marrying Piya to escape paying a hefty divorce settlement. The film also featured Anupam Kher in an interesting role of a midget lawyer and Suhaan’s uncle.
Set against the brutal backdrop of the Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, the Vidhu Vinod Chopra directorial revolves around a simple Kashmiri Pandit couple (played by Aadil Khan and Sadia Khateeb) who eventually become the victims of the insurgency in 1990. How the couple persistently struggles but stays strong for thirty years because of their intense and pure love for each other, forms the film’s premise.
