8 Years of ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’: Ayan Mukerji’s Cinematic Rundown

As filmmaker Ayan Mukerji’s popular dramedy ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ completes eight years today, we give you a cinematic rundown and some interesting facts about the talented director.

Ayan Mukerji was born to Bengali film actor Deb Mukherjee, whose daughter is married to eminent filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker. Meaning thereby that Ayan Mukerji is Ashutosh Gowariker’s brother-in-law! Other eminent relatives of Ayan Mukerji are Kajol (cousin), Tanuja (aunt), Joy Mukherjee (uncle), and Kishore Kumar (grand uncle).

It’s a well-known fact that Ayan Mukerji made his directorial debut in the year 2009 with ‘Wake Up Sid’. The film featured the unusual lead pair of Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma. Its story revolved around a carefree college student from Mumbai and his beautiful relationship with a sensible, aspiring writer from Kolkata. The film was praised for its lead performances and adept execution.

However, not many people are aware that Ayan Mukerji started off his Bollywood career by assisting Ashutosh Gowariker in his acclaimed film ‘Swades’ starring Shah Rukh Khan. Incidentally, he had also co-written the screenplay for ‘Swades’ alongside Gowariker and others.

Then, in the year 2013 came Ayan Mukerji’s blockbuster rom-com ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’. Produced by Karan Johar, the film featured Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone alongside Aditya Roy Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin. It eventually became one of the highest-grossing Indian films and grossed over a whopping 300 crores at the box office.

However, Ayan Mukerji’s most ambitious project is the upcoming fantasy action-adventure film titled ‘Brahmastra’ (a trilogy). The film boasts an ensemble cast that includes Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Divyenndu, Dimple Kapadia, Prateik Babbar and Mouni Roy, amongst others. Moreover, the film is also said to have Shah Rukh Khan in a special cameo.

Ayan Mukerji had earlier said that ‘Brahmastra’ is a contemporary film with ancient elements and the tiles resonates with ancient wisdom, energies, and power.
