The sports drama which tells the story of the first Indian cricket world cup victory, “83” is streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar and Netflix. The movie debuted in theaters on December 24, 2021 and has got a decent response from the audience. The movie was directed by Kabir Khan and had featured a stellar cast where Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, Jiiva along with others portrayed the other characters.
The OTT release of the movie is amid the stay by Bombay High court when Man Man filed a plea at the digital release of the movie.
The movie was based on the astonishing journey made by the Indian team “Kapil’s Devils” in the cricket world cup of 1983. India clinched the title after defeating the West Indians at the final. Movie had many goosebumps moments. The portrayal of Kapil Dev by Ranvir Singh was an over-the-top performance from the actor.
Despite having a good thrilling story, the movie didn’t perform to an expected level at the box office. The movie was meant to be a blockbuster but it failed. The movie had an opening with “Spiderman No Way Home” and “Pushpa” which affected the collection for sure, but the film had actually failed to covert the hype and nostalgia.
Bollywood has previously made movies like “Lagaan”, “Azhar”, “M.S Dhoni” which were biopics and dramas based on cricket. There is another biopic of Jhulan Goswami, “Chakda Xpress” starring Anushka Sharma on the way.
