John Abraham’s latest action thriller launched on 15th of August after a lot of truffle with the censor board. The movie, like every other John starrer action movie, addresses a social or nationalist issue, focuses on unrealistic action and creates a hype that this is not a usual action thriller that you come across. But is the movie worth giving a try? Can we say the social message was delivered through it?
Vedaa begins with the character of Abhimanyu Kanwar (an ex Gorkha soldier) who has been court martialled for avenging his wife’s murder by terrorists. Then comes the character of Vedaa (Sharvari), a woman belonging to a lower caste community who has faced caste discrimination and oppression from upper caste people. Her brother was killed by the village Pradhan Jitendra Pratap Singh (Abhisek Banerjee) who also killed a girl of her family for running away with a lower caste guy. Vedaa is an ambitious girl who aims to do a lot in her life and wants to learn boxing. She comes around Abhimanyu who teaches her boxing (she becomes an element of redemption for him). The upper caste people want to kill Vedaa and what follows is her struggle to survive and fight this issue of caste.
The movie’s focus on the issue of caste seems very prominent in it. The attention to detail is applaudable. For an instance, we see a lower caste girl asking an upper caste girl to fill her water bottle. Then we see a girl screaming but she is unable to do anything when assaulted by men of upper caste. The characterisation of Abhisek and his acting as an upper caste patriarch is so captivating. He has always impressed us with his work. Though there are certain sections of illogical action which makes the movie uninteresting; and the songs which do not play any significant role in the movie, become a problem to bear while watching. Still, the movie comes out as a good watch and is able to convey (though in not an excellent manner) the message that it intends to put forward.
Overall, the movie is a decent watch, one can’t say it is watch worthy or something you must not pass; still it creates a significant impact on you and is not a waste of time to watch.
