Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is set to become the 12th television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fifth animated series produced under the Marvel Animation banner. It will explore Peter Parker’s (Hudson Thames) early days as the iconic web-slinger and will take place outside the main MCU timeline (Earth-616). In this alternate timeline, the series follows Parker’s journey as a high school student who fights crime in his free time. His life takes a dramatic turn when Norman Osborn (Colman Domingo) becomes his mentor—unlike Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, in the MCU.
The upcoming Disney+ series will feature plenty of new and intriguing characters, such as Lonnie Lincoln (Eugene Byrd), Nico Minoru (Grace Song), Harry Osborn (Zeno Robinson), Bentley Whitman (Paul F. Tompkins), and more. Alongside them, familiar faces like Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Otto Octavius (Hugh Dancy), and May Parker (Kari Wahlgren) will also make an appearance. One of the new characters rumoured to appear is Screwball, a divisive figure in Spider-Man lore. While this character may not sit well with avid Spider-Man comic book fans, her inclusion adds an interesting twist to the series.
The recently released trailer for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man features Spidey apprehending a group of young criminals livestreaming their crimes. After webbing them up, Spidey grabs the camera and introduces himself. The livestream chat shows other users joining, one of whom is revealed to be Screwball.
This is what her message says: “If you guys want to see better content, check out my channel!!!”
Screwball is often seen as an annoying Spider-Man villain by many fans due to her personality and tactics. A social media-obsessed criminal, she commits crimes for attention and views, often livestreaming her actions. Her need for validation and over-the-top, often obnoxious behaviour can grate on audiences. Furthermore, her crimes are typically petty and disruptive rather than genuinely threatening, making her more of a nuisance than a serious villain. This frustrates those who prefer to see Spider-Man face more formidable foes.
On the other hand, many view Screwball as a satire of internet influencers and their relentless pursuit of fame. Ultimately, viewers will decide how they feel about the character after watching the series. Much will depend on how Screwball is portrayed—her character could either win over new fans or alienate more audiences, depending on the show’s approach. Alternatively, her inclusion might simply serve as an Easter egg for fans, with no significant role in the series.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is set to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar for Indian viewers on January 29, 2025, and will feature ten episodes. Stay tuned for more updates.
