The 28th edition of the prestigious Busan International Film Festival aka BIFF kicked off on 4th October at Busan city located in South Korea. The festival will conclude on 13th October. A total of more than 260 films will be showcased at BIFF 2023. The opening film was South Korea’s ‘Because I Hate Korea’ and the closing movie would be the Chinese film ‘The Movie Emperor’.
Some popular and critically acclaimed foreign films such as ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, ‘Fallen Leaves’, and ‘The Killer’, etc. will be showcased at the ongoing Busan fest. Moreover, several interesting Indian films are also a part of the Busan International Film Festival 2023. Here is a list of the Indian movies (including co-productions with other countries) at BIFF 2023 along with their respective segments and synopsis.
Against the Tide (Segment: Wide Angle – Documentary Showcase)
Sarvnik Kaur’s documentary film revolves around two friends Rakesh and Ganesh, who work as fishermen in Mumbai. While one of them deploys traditional fishing methods, the other one uses a more modern approach of deep-sea fishing. But both these men must deal with their own problems as a rift begins to develop in their friendship.
Agra (Segment: A Window on Asian Cinema)
Helmed by Kanu Behl (Director – Titli), the psychological drama movie follows the protagonist Guro, a depressed call center employee whose loneliness makes him drift towards the world of dating apps and sexual fantasies.
Flickering Lights (Segment: Wide Angle – Documentary Competition)
Directed by Anupama Srinivasan, the documentary film revolves around a far-off village on the India-Myanmar border whose resident villagers get excited with the news of their homes getting an electricity connection.
Guras (Segment: A Window on Asian Cinema)
Set amidst the scenic backdrop of a village near Darjeeling, the heartwarming film follows a nine-year-old girl named and her desperate search for his missing dog Tinkle.
Joram (Segment: A Window on Asian Cinema)
Directed by ‘Bhonsle’ director Devashish Makhija, the film features Manoj Bajpayee in the role of a desperate father who is on the run with his little daughter to save her from his dark past and from the people who want him dead at any cost. It also features Zeeshan Ayyub in an important role of a cop.
Paradise (Segment: Jiseok)
Helmed by Sri Lankan filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage, the film follows a married couple (played by Roshan Matthews and Darshana Rajendran), who travel to Sri Lanka to celebrate their anniversary. But their leisure trip takes an unexpected turn after an incident threatens to ruin their relationship.
Rapture (Segment: A Window on Asian Cinema)
Directed by Dominic Sangma, the film focuses on a young boy who disappears from his village one night, sparking rumors that has been taken away by child traffickers.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (Segment: Open Cinema)
It’s a family drama movie and the basic story is about how an affluent Punjabi lad Rocky (played by Ranveer Singh) meets and falls in love with a drastically different Bengali girl Rani (Alia Bhatt). To check whether their marriage will survive or not, they decide to live with each other’s families for some time, leading to an amusing turn of events.
The Scavenger of Dreams (Segment: A Window on Asian Cinema)
Helmed by Suman Ghosh (Director – Aadhaar), the social drama follows the story of slum dwellers Birju and Sona, who roam around Kolkata’s wealthy areas collecting trash on a cart. Their daily experiences as trash collectors form the basis for various stories for their daughter.
The Spark (Segment: New Currents)
Rajesh S. Jala’s film follows a revengeful filmmaker, a victim of a violence, who carries out an assignment in Varanasi which focuses on a young cremator and an old woman awaiting her death.
