A Look at Indian Films at Toronto International Film Festival 2022

Ardent cinephiles might already be aware that the 47th edition of the reputed Toronto International Film Festival 2022 (TIFF) is scheduled to be held from 8th September 2021 to 18th September 2022 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. And in case you are wondering about any Indian films participating in the festival, you have come to the right place. The following Indian movies will be a part of the upcoming 2022 edition of TIFF.

Kacchey Limbu (Gala Presentations)

Directed by Shubham Yogi in his feature film directorial debut, the Mumbai-based coming-of-age sibling drama will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2022. The film’s story revolves around Aditi (played by Radhika Madan of Pataakha fame), who finds herself on the opposing cricket team of her brother. How the siblings deal with their passions and manage family loyalty, forms the film’s underlying premise.

Zwigato (Contemporary World Cinema)

Written and directed by actor-filmmaker Nandita Das, the movie narrates a bittersweet tale of a married couple (played by popular stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma and Shahana Goswami) and their persistent struggles to make a living in Bhubaneshwar in the post-pandemic era. In the slice-of-life film, Kapil Sharma will be seen in the role of a food delivery rider and a conservative husband who is shown to be apprehensive about his wife’s decision to start earning. It will be Zwigato’s world premiere at TIFF.

Tora’s Husband (Platform)

Helmed by National Award-winning filmmaker Rima Das (Village Rockstars, Bulbul Can Sing), ‘Tora’s Husband’ is an Assamese language film which focuses on the life of a doting father who is struggling to keep his business afloat while dealing with worsening relationships amidst the backdrop of the pandemic lockdown in a small town. It features Abhijit Das and Tarali Kalita Das in the lead roles.

What’s Love Got to Do with It? (Gala Presentations)

Although it’s not an Indian film per se, it has been directed by the globally acclaimed Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapoor (Masoom, Mr. India) after a 15-year directorial hiatus. The movie is a British cross-cultural rom-com which revolves around a filmmaker Zoe (Lily James), who records her long-time friend Kazim’s (Shazad Latif) journey toward arrange marriage from London to South East Asia.

Besides the aforementioned Indian films, TIFF 2022 would also feature some highly anticipated movies including Peter Farrelly’s ‘The Greatest Beer Run Ever’, Florian Zeller’s ‘The Son’, ‘The Woman King’, Sam Mendes’ ‘Empire of Light’, Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’, and Rian Johnson’s ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’, amongst others.
