The 2023 edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is set to take place from 25th January to 5th February 2023. Several films from across the globe including India will feature at the upcoming prestigious festival. For this article, we have compiled a list of those Indian films which will make their world premieres at IFFR 2023.
All India Rank
It’s the closing film of IFFR 2023 and is the directorial debut of screenwriter and lyricist Varun Grover (Masaan, Sacred Games). The film’s story revolves around a middle-class seventeen-something boy named Vivek, who is sent to coaching hub Kota to prepare for and get enrolled into one of the premium engineering institutes – the IITs.
Four Slippers
The film has been helmed by maverick filmmaker Anurag Kashyap (Black Friday, Gangs of Wasseypur). Nothing much is currently known about the film’s precise plot details other than that it revolves around a man named Rajat who has one more chance to clear an exam.
Joram
Directed by ‘Bhonsle’ director Devashish Makhija, the film features Manoj Bajpayee in the role of a desperate father who is on the run with his little daughter to save her from his dark past and from the people who want him dead at any cost. It also features Zeeshan Ayyub in an important role of a cop.
Moha
Directed by ace cinematographer turned director Santosh Sivan, the film features Javed Jaffrey and Shaylee Krishnen in the lead roles. Its story is about the relationship between a nymph and a monk.
Family
Helmed by Don Palathara, the social drama movie revolves around a kind and helpful Christian man named Sony who lives in a village in Kerala and tries to help everyone. However, beneath his helpful nature lies something dark.
Follower
The film by Harshad Nalawade follows the story of a radicalized journalist who wants to expose the atrocities faced by his community but thinks about the happier and simpler times when he was unaffected by radicalism.
A Flower in a Foglight
The film narrates different stories about a butterfly-boy relationship, a digital projectionist who falls for a simulated airhostess, a government employee tasked with writing a village’s history, a woman’s fight with an iron-clad bird, and a mysterious village pond.
Which Colour?
Helmed by Shah Rukh Khan Chavada, the film’s narrative follows the daily life of a regular middle class big Muslim family which resides in the outskirts of Ahmedabad.
Last Days of Summer
Directed by Stenzin Tangong, the short film is about a young and eccentric outcast man who hears mysterious voices from the distant mountains which interfere in his mission to find a wife and secure a place in the social hierarchy.
Blueprint of a Pleasure Machine
The film has been directed by Amit Dutta. While nothing much is currently known about the film’s precise plot details, it apparently focuses on the era of some of the old films and times of Indian cinema.
Karparaa
The film has been helmed by Vignesh Kumulai (Cinematographer – Pebbles), but nothing much is known about the film’s plot line.
A Knock on the Door
The movie ‘A Knock on the Door’ has been set in Kolkata and belongs to the political thriller genre. It has been directed by Ranjan Palit – the talented cinematographer whose works include films such as ‘Pataakha’, and Nandita Das’s ‘Zwigato’.
Letters Unwritten to Naiyer Masud
Helmed by Shahi AJ, the film is ostensibly an imagined account focusing on the journey taken by a group of readers.
Night and Fear
The basic plot for the short film by Lipika Singh Darai is from the filmmaker’s leftover material from personal archives including a local witch hunt and an imposing waterfall, etc.
