The first full-fledged post-pandemic edition of China’s popular and well-respected film festival – the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival is slated to happen next month between 9th June to 18th June.
Recently, the festival stakeholders revealed the list of their ‘Main Competition’ titles. Besides Chinese titles, the films belong to different countries including the UK, Japan, Spain, Russia, Belgium, and Italy but surprisingly not even a single film from the US was included in the line-up. The Korean film industry too was conspicuous by its absence (because of the ban).
However, one title from India has been selected for the feature film Main Competition segment of the Shanghai International Film Festival 2023. And the only film from India which will be competing for the coveted ‘Main Competition’ award is Manipur-based Indian filmmaker Haobam Paban Kumar’s feature film titled ‘Joseph’s Son’.
Directed by Haobam Paban Kumar, ‘Joseph’s Son’ (aka Josephki Macha) is an adventure drama movie featuring Padma Shri Awardee Guru Rewben Mashangva in the main role, amongst other cast members. The underlying story of the movie revolves around the journey of the protagonist along the valley and his relationship with neighboring people and nature. The plot follows a father who unwillingly travels for the identification of the body of his deceased son and how he finally tries to come to terms with the incident.
It would be interesting to see whether a relatively small Manipur-based Indian film like Haobam Paban Kumar’s ‘Joseph’s Son’ can win an award at the ‘Main Competition’ feature film section at the Shanghai International Film Festival 2023 or not. Stay tuned to Binged for the latest updates on the same.
