The first day of July every year is celebrated in India as National Doctor’s Day in the memory of India’s highly regarded physician and politician Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. So, what could be a better occasion to watch a film based on the life of a doctor? For our weekend binge-watch recommendation, we suggest you watch a film called ‘The Last King of Scotland’, in case you still haven’t. It is streaming on the Disney+ Hotstar OTT platform in India.
Although ‘The Last Film of Scotland’ is not an Indian film, it’s still a must-watch for movie buffs in general owing to its universal appeal and the fact that the ethics and mindset of doctors share a lot of similarities across the globe. Directed by Kevin MacDonald, the historical drama movie is based on journalist Giles Foden’s 1998 novel of the same name.
Set in the 1970s period, ‘The Last King of Scotland’ follows the story of a young Scottish physician Dr. Nicholas Garrigan (played by James McAvoy), who goes to Uganda to work in a missionary clinic. But soon after, the doctor gets a golden opportunity to become the personal physician of the country’s new president Idi Amin (played by Forest Whitaker). But the doctor gets more than he had bargained for after he learns more about the ruthless dictator and tries to get out of there.
‘The Last King of Scotland’ received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The movie holds a highly impressive critics’ score of 87% on reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes.
