We’re talking about a made for TV movie directed by none other than legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg. And the film’s name is ‘Duel’, which was also his directorial debut. The film came out back in the year 1971 but don’t let the year of release dissuade you from watching it. This timeless film came out much before Steven Spielberg became a household name with films like ‘E.T’, ‘Jaws’, and the ‘Indiana Jones’ films series, etc.
Based on Richard Matheson’s short story of the same name, ‘Duel’ follows an electronics salesman David Mann (Dennis Weaver), who is travelling through a desert in California. When he overtakes an old oil tanker truck, the demented truck driver feels offended, goes berserk, and begins to wildly chase the protagonist. And thereafter begins a deadly cat-and-mouse game between the two.
‘Duel’ is a mostly undiscovered and underrated gem on OTT. It’s streaming in India on the Amazon Prime Video store on pay-per-view basis (Rs.99/- rental cost). We don’t often recommend PPV films but this one is special.
‘Duel’ garnered immense praise from critics after its release. On reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Duel’ is ‘Certified Fresh’ and holds a highly impressive 89% critics’ score. You can watch the film’s trailer below to get a better idea before watching the movie.
